The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant (MC) William H. Buchan, United States Naval Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action in the care and evacuation of the wounded while serving as Battalion Surgeon of a Marine Infantry Battalion of the THIRD Marine Division, in action against the enemy on Guam, Mariana Islands from 21 to 26 July 1944. On 22 July in order to tend to the wounds of casualties before their evacuation down a perpendicular cliff, Lieutenant Buchan insisted on occupying a forward aid station at the top of the cliff, one hundred yards from the front lines. On the night of 22 – 23 July although heavy mortar fire fell on his position and the Japanese (Remainder of Citation Missing). His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
