The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant William George Brown (NSN: 0-81204/1100), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action in the line of his profession as Sound Officer in the U.S.S. PLUNGER (SS-179), during three successive War Patrols of that Submarine in enemy controlled waters. Under extremely difficult conditions during repeated and accurate depth charge attacks he furnished the Commanding Officer with correct information which directly aided in the successful evasion tactics and withdrawal from a confined area with only minor damage to his boat.
