    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit with Combat “V” to Captain (MC) Carl A. Broaddus (NSN: 0-12339), United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as a Task Force Medical Officer during two successful amphibious assaults upon enemy-held Pacific Island objectives from December 1943 to August 1944. By virtue of his wide knowledge of amphibious operations and his tireless devotion to duty, his services were of great assistance to the Task Force Commander in the formulation of plans for the rapid handling and care of casualties which later resulted in the saving of lives among our wounded personnel. At great personal risk he inspected and supervised the evacuation of wounded from beaches during the assault and their distribution into available transports and hospital ships. His outstanding service and conduct throughout were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. (Captain Broaddus is authorized to wear the Combat “V”.)

    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (MC) Carl A. Broaddus (NSN: 0-12339), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action in the line of his profession as Medical Officer on the Staff of the Commander Attack Force during the assault and occupation of enemy-held Attu Island. Captain Broaddus landed with the assault troops and remained on Attu Island for a prolonged period. He visited the front lines frequently and was exposed to enemy fire, while personally supervising the collection and evacuation of casualties and while generally directing naval medical activities ashore. He undoubtedly was instrumental in saving many lives by his efforts on shore. His conduct throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Legion of Merit with Combat “V” to Captain (MC) Carl A. Broaddus (NSN: 0-12339), United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Medical Officer on the Staff of Commander Scouting Force and Commander of a Task Force from 1 February 1941 to 1 July 1942. He was tireless in developing instructions for the Medical Departments of combatant vessels and attack transports. By lectures, written instructions, and personal visits, he aroused a keen interest in the subject and helped to prepare both line and medical personnel for the harsh realities of war. After the outbreak of hostilities, he was continuously at sea with a Task Force for prolonged periods and participated in various operations in the Pacific in the early days of the war. During this time, by example and precept, he taught officers and men to keep healthy and cheerful despite tropical discomfort and long periods at sea. He also aided the Marines in developing and understanding the medical phases of landing operations. His conduct was at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. (Captain Broaddus is authorized to wear the Combat “V”.)
