The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Pharmacist’s Mate Second Class Gerald T. Arrington, United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Corpsman with the FIRST Marine Division, in the Solomon Islands. On the night of 13 – 14 October 1942, during the heavy enemy naval gun fire, Pharmacist’s Mate Second Class Arrington assisted the active Chief Pharmacist’s Mate to administer first aid to two wounded with utter disregard for his own safety. During the first lull in the firing he made at rip throughout the bivouac area to determine if there were any more wounded, and made sure that no one was in need of medical attention before returning to his post at the battalion sick bay. On the succeeding nights he slept in the center of the bivouac area in order to be near the men in case anyone was injured from shell fire. Pharmacist’s Mate Second Class Arrington’s actions on this night showed an utter disregard for his own safety in order to aid his comrades, and was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
