    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Albert Frederick Betzel, United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action in the performance of his duties as Diving Officer aboard the U.S.S. ASPRO (SS-309) during the FIFTH War Patrol of that Submarine from 10 September to 14 October 1944. His thorough knowledge of his ship and precise control of depth were of valuable assistance to his Commanding Officer in conducting attacks against enemy shipping which resulted in sinking enemy vessels totaling more than 25,000 tons, and in damaging more than 8,500 tons. His skill and sound judgment contributed materially to the success of his vessel. His conduct throughout was an inspiration to the officers and men in his ship and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
