The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private George L. Sumpter (ASN: 34437275), United States Army, for gallantry in action in connection with combat operations against the enemy while serving with Troop E, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division in action on Los Negros Island of the Admiralty Group, on 20 February 1944. Private Sumpter’s troop participated in the initial assault of enemy-held territory, and after close combat during the day, established a defensive perimeter for the night. After dark enemy groups infiltrated the defenses. While being stalked by an enemy soldier, Private Sumpter observed his comrade in an adjoining foxhole being attacked by two enemy soldiers, while an enemy officer was attempting to stalk him from behind. Disregarding his own assailant, he abandoned the protection of his foxhole, exposing himself to enemy fire, rose to his feet and killed the enemy officer, then turned and killed his own attacker. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
