Headquarters, 8th Air Force, General Orders No. 59 (February 16, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant (Air Corps) John G. Schultz (ASN: 0-682243), United States Army Air Forces, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight while serving as Navigator of the leading airplane of a Heavy Bombardment Division on a mission over Germany on 16 December 1943. The duties of Lieutenant Schultz were made exceedingly difficult as a result of an unforeseen delay after assembly and due to extremely adverse weather conditions en route to the target. In spite of these difficulties, he led the formation directly to the assigned target, reaching it at the scheduled time of arrival. The successful bombing of important enemy installations by his unit was in a large measure attributable to the courage and skillful navigation of Lieutenant Schultz. His actions on this occasion reflect highest credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
