The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Eugene V. Sher, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 303d Infantry Regiment, 97th Infantry Division, in connection with military operations against an armed enemy. Lieutenant Sher’s company while advancing toward Neualbonrouth, Germany, on 4 May 1945, encountered a heavily defended position. Halting the company Lieutenant Sher moved alone into an open field toward the position to determine its location and strength. When within shouting distance he persuaded the enemy commander to surrender his unit of 117 men. This audacious accomplishment enabled his company to continue its advance without interruption or casualties. Lieutenant Sher’s gallantry on this occasion reflects high credit upon himself and the Armed Forces.
