The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class George J. Johnston (ASN: 33731365), United States Army, for gallantry in action on 17 April 1945, while serving with the 91st Infantry Division near Catarosa, Italy. When two platoons of his company were unable to move, due to severe mortar, machine gun and rifle fire, Private First Class Johnston courageously crawled forward to an advantageous firing position to engage the enemy. Although enemy bullets struck all about him, private First Class Johnston stood up in the face of this fire and delivered accurate bazooka fire on an enemy machine gun forcing the enemy to abandon their position. Through Private First Class Johnston’s courageous action, the two platoons were able to maneuver, replenish their supplies and continue the advance. His initiative coolness under fire and devotion to duty reflects the highest traditions of the United States Army.
