Headquarters, 63d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 171 (May 19, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Staff Sergeant Leonard T. Anderson (ASN: 35251452), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with the enemy while serving with Anti-tank Company, 253d Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, on 13 April 1945, in the vicinity of Neunstadt, Germany. While returning at about 2400 from patrol action, Sergeant Anderson’s squad moved across a foot bridge over the Kocher River. One soldier lost his footing and fell into the river. Another member of the squad observed the happening and leaped into the river to rescue the man, but became exhausted. Realizing the possibility of both men drowning, Sergeant Anderson, without regard for personal safety, leaped into the river and brought both men to safety. The bravery exhibited by Sergeant Anderson reflect great credit upon himself and is in accord with the finest traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States.
