Headquarters, 63d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 57 (March 23, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Corporal Joseph W. Liberato (ASN: 33798127), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with the enemy while serving with Headquarters Company, 63d Infantry Division, on 2 March 1945, in the vicinity of Sarreguemines, France. While playing on the debris of what was once a bridge, a child slipped and fell into the Saar River and was being carried downstream. With complete disregard for his safety, Corporal Liberato fearlessly plunged into the stream, reached the child and brought him to safety. This heroic and hazardous action, in the face of imminent danger, reflects great credit upon Corporal Liberato and is in keeping with the finest traditions of fidelity and courage.
