The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Sergeant Robb W. Robertson, United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an armed enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. Sergeant Robertson distinguished himself while serving as a member of an ambush patrol on the night of 12 December 1970. That night the patrol inadvertently entered an active minefield surrounding Fire Support Base Alpha Four and suffered extensive casualties from anti-personnel mines. The explosion knocked Sergeant Robertson to the ground, and although dazed he was the only member of the patrol that was not seriously injured. With complete disregard for his own personal safety Sergeant Robertson moved through the minefield to the nearest wounded man. He administered first aid and moved to the next wounded man and bandaged him. By this time a medical evacuation helicopter had located the patrol and was hovering over Sergeant Robertson’s position. Realizing that a cleared area would be necessary before any personnel could be inserted to assist him evacuate the casualties, Sergeant Robertson probed and cleared an area large enough for one man to descend from the helicopter. Only after the last wounded man was placed on a MEDEVAC hoist and removed from the minefield did Sergeant Robertson allow himself to be lifted out of the minefield. Sergeant Robertson’s heroic actions and selfless devotion to his fellow man were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
