The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Major (Medical Corps) Levon K. Garron (ASN: 0-472912), United States Army Air Forces, for heroism at Fenton Field, in northern Australia, on 25 August 1943. When a B-24 aircraft crashed and burst into flames near the airstrip, Major Garron rushed to the scene in an ambulance. He assisted the co-pilot to a stretcher and ran to the burning Liberator to search for other injured personnel. Hearing screams from inside the fuselage, Major Garron, assisted by two other officers, cut a hole in the plane, removed one of the men and carried him to the ambulance. Although the fire was spreading rapidly and .50 caliber shells were exploding continually, he returned to the bomber and assisted in removing two other men. The bravery displayed by Major Garron in risking his own life to save the lives of others reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
