The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal to Captain Arthur S. Cunningham, Jr. (AFSN: 17304A), United States Air Force, for exceptionally meritorious service as a Rescue Control Officer of the 3d Air Rescue Group assigned to the FIFTH Air Force Tactical Air Control Center in Korea, from 11 January 1953 through 27 July 1953. He was responsible for directing and controlling rescue activities and operations for recovery of downed airmen on land and sea, both in hostile and friendly territory, and evacuation of wounded United Nations personnel from inaccessible areas. During the performance of these duties on 18 May 1953, Captain Cunningham set up a rescue mission within enemy territory that resulted in saving two crew members of a B-26 type aircraft, that was shot down the night before. He planned all details of the mission and directed the search, the capping aircraft, and the helicopter that made the pick-up. Through his efforts the successful return to friendly territory of these airmen was accomplished. Captain Cunningham has demonstrated outstanding ability, initiative and devotion to duty, bringing great credit upon himself, FIFTH Air Force and the United States Air Force.
