The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Aviation Radioman Lloyd F. Childers, United States Navy, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as gunner of a torpedo squadron airplane in action against enemy Japanese forces in the Battle of Midway, 4 June 1942. While participating in a torpedo plane attack against enemy naval forces, Aviation Radioman Childers, disregarding the extreme danger from intense anti-aircraft fire and overwhelming fighter opposition, vigorously and with heroic determination repelled enemy air attacks until seriously wounded. Although no longer able to man his free machine gun, he continued to fire on attacking enemy Japanese planes with his .45 caliber pistol. His great courage and devotion to duty in a situation of grave danger were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
