(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: Major John P. Condon (MCSN: 0-4986), United States Marine Corps, was awarded the Legion of Merit for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States from January to July 1943.

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Legion of Merit to Lieutenant Colonel John P. Condon (MCSN: 0-4986), United States Marine Corps, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Commanding Officer of the Fighter Command, Air North Solomon Islands, in the Cape Torokina Area, Bougainville, Solomon Islands, from 1 September to 10 December 1943. Personally leading his unit ashore, Lieutenant Colonel Condon immediately directed the setting up of the installations of his command despite unfavorable conditions of terrain and heavily concentrated enemy gunfire. He demonstrated professional attainment of a high order and a marked capacity for command in the organization, training and operation of his unit. His splendid initiative, intrepid courage and tireless devotion to duty throughout this period were an inspiration to his men and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Brigadier General John P. Condon (MCSN: 0-4986), United States Marine Corps, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States from 15 April 1958 to 1 April 161 as Deputy Director for Operations, J-3 Division, Headquarters, United States European Command. Exercising a high degree of leadership, professional skill and enthusiasm, Brigadier General Condon provided guidance and inspiration to his subordinates and displayed exceptional ability in analyzing and resolving difficult and involved problems in the field of unified command operations. His expert knowledge, professional competence, intelligence and dynamic aggressiveness have been significant factors in assuring the successful participation of this headquarters in the numerous exercises in which the United States European Command played a principal role. Brigadier General Condon’s recommendations in the complex field of international politico-military affairs and command relationships were as clear in expression as they were sound in concept and provided a positive basis for progress in these vital areas. Through his sustained and distinguished achievements, he contributed immeasurably to the accomplishment of the mission of this Headquarters, and increased significantly the operational readiness of the United States European Command, thereby reflecting great credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
