In 1932 Frederic Glantzberg was struck by a 22-pound antenna from another aircraft and knocked unconscious with a compound skull fracture. He regained consciousness in time to safely land his airplane before he passed out again. As a result of that accident he was forced to live the rest of his life with four square inches of his scull missing over his right ear. He retired in 1959 as a U.S. Air Force Major General.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Colonel (Air Corps) Frederic Ernst Glantzberg (ASN: 0-17398), United States Army Air Forces, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as Pilot of a B-24 type aircraft. On 14 May 1944, Colonel Glantzberg led a wing formation against a vitally important enemy rail center in Rumania. Despite intense and accurate enemy anti-aircraft fire over the target area which seriously damaged his aircraft, Colonel Glantzberg brought his entire formation through the enemy defenses directly to the target for a highly successful bombing run. Enemy rolling stock, supplies and installations were destroyed with large fires started in the target area. Rallying his group off the target, he skillfully maneuvered his formation through enemy territory for a safe landing at base without loss. By his outstanding leadership, professional skill and devotion to duty, together with his personal combat record of over sixteen successful missions against the enemy. Colonel Glantzberg has reflected great credit upon hi9mself and the Armed Forces of the United States of America.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Colonel (Air Corps) Frederic Ernst Glantzberg (ASN: 0-17398), United States Army Air Forces, for gallantry in action as Pilot of a B-24 Liberator Bomber of the 461st Bombardment Group (Heavy), FIFTEENTH Air Force. On 15 July 1944, Colonel Glantzberg led a wing formation on a bombing mission against a vital enemy oil center in Rumania. Despite severe and adverse weather conditions, skillfully avoiding all areas of heavy enemy flak concentrations, Colonel Glantzberg brought the entire formation directly to the target. Approaching the objective which was observed to be completely obscured by cloud cover and smoke screens, intense and accurate enemy anti-aircraft fire was encountered. Despite these hazards, displaying outstanding leadership and combat skill, utilizing a new type of instrument for pinpoint bombing procedures, Colonel Glantzberg brought his entire wing formation through the enemy defenses for a highly successful bombing run. Under his capable direction, the bombs from his ship and from those of the entire formation, were concentrated in the immediate target area inflicting grave damage to vital installations, supplies and equipment. Turning from the target, he quickly rallied his wing, enabling the crippled bombers to remain well within the protective formation and brought his formation through for a safe landing at base without further damage. By his outstanding courage, tactical skill and devotion to duty as evidenced throughout over thirty-four successful missions against the enemy, Colonel Glantzberg has reflected great credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
