The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Colonel (Air Corps) Frederic Ernst Glantzberg (ASN: 0-17398), United States Army Air Forces, for gallantry in action as Pilot of a B-24 Liberator Bomber of the 461st Bombardment Group (Heavy), FIFTEENTH Air Force. On 15 July 1944, Colonel Glantzberg led a wing formation on a bombing mission against a vital enemy oil center in Rumania. Despite severe and adverse weather conditions, skillfully avoiding all areas of heavy enemy flak concentrations, Colonel Glantzberg brought the entire formation directly to the target. Approaching the objective which was observed to be completely obscured by cloud cover and smoke screens, intense and accurate enemy anti-aircraft fire was encountered. Despite these hazards, displaying outstanding leadership and combat skill, utilizing a new type of instrument for pinpoint bombing procedures, Colonel Glantzberg brought his entire wing formation through the enemy defenses for a highly successful bombing run. Under his capable direction, the bombs from his ship and from those of the entire formation, were concentrated in the immediate target area inflicting grave damage to vital installations, supplies and equipment. Turning from the target, he quickly rallied his wing, enabling the crippled bombers to remain well within the protective formation and brought his formation through for a safe landing at base without further damage. By his outstanding courage, tactical skill and devotion to duty as evidenced throughout over thirty-four successful missions against the enemy, Colonel Glantzberg has reflected great credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
