(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Air Corps) Moses Joseph Gatewood, Jr. (ASN: 0-25613), United States Army Air Forces, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving as Pilot of a B-26 Bomber with the 597th Bombardment Squadron, 397th Bombardment Group (Heavy), NINTH Air Force, in aerial operations during a bombing mission over the Seine River area, on 24 June 1944, and during two months of subsequent escape and evasion. On entering Spain on 9 August, he delivered a new radio code system of the Maquis to the American Consul there, for the Germans had broken the old code. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Major Gatewood, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army Air Forces.
