The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Staff Sergeant Henry Erben, United States Army Air Forces, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy, at Atlantic City, New Jersey, on 14 September 1944. During the height of a hurricane, Sergeant Erben, with total disregard for his own safety, made his way through a storm-swept street and evacuated an elderly invalid whose life was endangered by the turbulent water and floating debris. The prompt and courageous action exhibited by Sergeant Erben in voluntarily exposing himself to grave danger to aid another reflects great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
