John Catlin served during World War II as an enlisted member of the Army Air Corps and was honorably discharged as a sergeant after the war ended. He was commissioned in the Air Force through the Reserve Officer Training Corps program in 1951 upon graduation from Virginia Military Institute. He retired in 1981 as a U.S. Air Force Brigadier General.
