Gerald Taggart was a Catholic priest serving at St. Joseph’s Parish in Spring Valley Rock, New York, and then at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Scarsdale, when World War II began. One of ten children in the Taggart family, he joined three brothers and a sister in volunteering for military service, and was commissioned a U.S. Army Chaplain. He was serving with the 29th Infantry Division when they landed on the beach at Normandy, France, with the first assault troops on D-Day, and ministered to his men through Normandy, Brittany, the capture of St. Lo, and then spearheading the attack into Germany. He was wounded in the action for which he received the Silver Star, and evacuated to a hospital in England for two months. After his recovery he returned to action with NINTH Army Headquarters.
