The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant Colonel Russell Dumas Brewington, Jr. (AFSN: FR-23852/AO-709885), United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a Forward Air Controller on 1 March 1967. On that date, while on a mission in support of a joint ARVN/USMC operation, Colonel Brewington detected a well-armed hostile force in fortified positions preparing to flank the friendly units. Although faced with continuous moderate to heavy ground fire, extremely adverse weather conditions, and very poor terrain features, he directed sixteen fighter sorties against the insurgents and their positions, eliminating them as an effective force and preserving the integrity of the friendly units along that flank. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Colonel Brewington reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
