Edward Young, although he read extensively, did not graduate from high school Despite that, he took the entrance exam to Culver-Stockton University in Canton, Missouri, was admitted, and earned a B.A. degree. He then attended Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, where he was a member of the Honor Society, and graduated in 1935 with an M.A. and Bachelor of Divinity degree. He was ordained a minister in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), pastoring in small and poor churches during the latter years of the Great Depression. The family moved to Greenville, Kentucky, where in 1941 Reverend Young entered military service and was commissioned a U.S. Army chaplain. He served as a chaplain to a Field Artillery unit in France in 1944, earning a Silver Star. Following the war he returned to civilian ministry at Jackson Avenue Christian Church in Greenville.

    (Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Chaplain’s Corps) Edward Leroy Young, United States Army, for gallantry In action while serving as Chaplain with the Division Artillery, 30th Infantry Division, in action in France, on 22 June 1944. Chaplain Young evacuated wounded men from an aid station under heavy artillery fire. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Chaplain Young, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
