Charles Bond enlisted in the Texas National Guard in 1932 and received his pilot wings in 1939. He left the service in 1941 to join the “Flying Tigers” in China, where he was shot down twice. He joined the Army Air Forces after the “Flying Tigers” was disbanded, serving throughout World War II, and transferred to the U.S. Air Force when it became a separate branch of service in 1947. He retired in 1968 as a U.S. Air Force Major General.
