Robert Bazley enlisted in the Army Air Forces during World War II but never saw combat as the war ended before he completed his training. He left the service after the war, but was recalled to duty in the U.S. Air Force in the Korean War, flying combat in that theater of war, and subsequently returned to combat air missions in the Vietnam War. He retired in 1987 as a U.S. Air Force 4-Star General.
