Headquarters, U.S. Army Forces in the Middle East, General Orders No. 44 (July 12, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Chief Officer Walter A. Equils, United States Merchant Marine, for gallantry in action during a bombing attack on Tripoli Harbor on the night of 19 March 1943. When an ammunition vessel moored alongside Mr. Equil’s ship was struck by bombs and burst into flames endangering their safety of his vessel, without a moment’s delay he cut his mooring lines, hoisting one anchor and dragging the other, he moved his ship out of danger. A delay of a few minutes probably would have resulted in the loss of the ship and her valuable cargo. Later, by his excellent handling and maneuvering he avoided another threatening fire and a circling torpedo. Exhibiting great courage and coolness, with a disregard for his own safety, Mr. Equils organized the crew for fire fighting, lookouts, lifesaving, and other duties while under intense fire and constant danger of being bombed.
