The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting a Silver Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Sixth Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Major Earl L. Thornton (AFSN: FV-3034442), United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as an F-105 Pilot over North Vietnam on 6 July 1967. On that date, Major Thornton was in a flight assigned to attack a rail yard northeast of Hanoi. Flying through withering anti-aircraft fire he delivered his bombs precisely on target and caused heavy damage throughout the yard. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Major Thornton reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
