Thomas McNish graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, Colorado, Class of 1964. He was interned as a Prisoner of War in North Vietnam after he was shot down on September 4, 1966, and was held until his release on March 4, 1973. He retired in 1994 as a U.S. Air Force Colonel.

On that date, as Pilot of an F-105D Thunderchief, Lieutenant McNish was directed to destroy a large Petroleum Storage Facility used in support of the North Vietnamese aggressive policies. In the face of savage defensive artillery and missiles, Lieutenant McNish continued to press the attack and successfully delivered his weapons to destroy the assigned target. By his gallantry and devotion to duty, Lieutenant McNish has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant Thomas Mitchell McNish, Sr. (AFSN: FR-78806), United States Air Force, for heroism while participating in aerial flight as an F-105 Thunderchief pilot of the 354th Tactical Fighter Squadron, Takhli Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand, in action at Thai Nguyen, North Vietnam, on 7 August 1966. On that date, Lieutenant McNish’s flight was in the final stages of an attack on a target in the vigorously defended Thai Nguyen complex when it was attacked by a hostile surface-to-air missile site. Despite the massive volume of fire emanating from the flak site protecting the missile installation, Lieutenant McNish silenced the anti-aircraft artillery with his eight seven-hundred-fifty pound bombs as other members of his flight demolished the SA-2 site. The outstanding heroism and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant McNish reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
