James Light served in the Navy as a Control Tower Operator from 1945 to 1947. In 1949 he was commissioned in the Air Force through the Aviation Cadet Program. He retired in 1988 as a U.S. Air Force Lieutenant General.

On that date, Major Light was assigned the mission of interdicting an extremely vital highway and railroad bridge. In spite of unusually heavy anti-aircraft fire, surface-to-air missile launches, and intense MiG activity, Major Light delivered his ordnance directly on target denying the use of this important transportation segment to the North Vietnamese. On that date, Major Light was Deputy Commander of sixteen F-105’s in a strike vital mission. The mission was a hazardous one with many surface-to-air missiles site and hostile gun positions. Never the less Major Light directed and delivered his ordnance exactly on target. The outstanding heroism and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Major Light has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.

On that date, Major Light while evading hostile MiG aircraft and surface-to-air missiles, courageously made four consecutive low level strafing passes against a well camouflaged helicopter area. The bold determination and exceptional flying abilities of Major Light aided immeasurably in destroying six helicopters and damaging two others. In these important assignments, General Light’s forceful leadership and initiative resulted in substantial improvements to worldwide readiness. He was the driving force in preparing the B-18 and Peacekeeper weapons systems for “on-alert” status.     The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in addition to a previously awarded Silver Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Seventh Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant Colonel James Edwin Light, Jr., United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as an F-4D Aircraft Commander at Udorn Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand, on 10 January 1971. On that date Colonel Light, while leading a flight of two F-4D tactical fighters was directed by a Nail Forward Air Controller (FAC) to destroy an important supply depot in Southeast Asia. Despite intense antiaircraft artillery fire and extremely limited visibility due to smoke and haze, Colonel Light delivered his ordnance with pinpoint accuracy destroying several trucks and causing several large secondary explosions. The professional competence, aerial skill and devotion to duty displayed by Major Light reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Second Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Third Award of the Silver Star to Major James Edwin Light, Jr., United States Air Force, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force while serving as an F-105 Pilot with the 357th Tactical Fighter Squadron, Takhli Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand, in action over North Vietnam on 28 October 1967. On that date, while leading a flight of four Thunderchiefs on a mission against a vital railroad bridge, Major Light became engulfed in a heavy barrage of antiaircraft fire and numerous surface-to-air missiles. With complete disregard for his own safety, Major Light led his flight through a successful ordnance delivery against the bridge, which was difficult to acquire due to haze, and helped to destroy it. Under his leadership and unwavering calmness, the entire flight safely recovered at their home base. By his gallantry and devotion to duty, Major Light reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major James Edwin Light, Jr., United States Air Force, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force while serving as an F-105 Pilot with the 357th Tactical Fighter Squadron, Takhli Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand, in action near Hanoi, North Vietnam, on 6 November 1967. On that date, Major Light was Force Commander of twenty F-105s targeted against a vital North Vietnamese motor vehicle repair depot and transformer station. Major Light led the force to the targets under extremely heavy odds, engineered a precise roll-in for the friendly forces, and delivered his ordnance directly on target. Because of his precise leadership, the force of Thunderchiefs obtained unequaled bombing accuracy, rendering both targets unserviceable. By his gallantry and devotion to duty, Major Light has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
