The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Air Corps), [then Captain] Edwin Borden Broadhurst (ASN: 0-20744), United States Army Air Forces, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving as Command Pilot of a B-17 Flying Fortress Bomber of the 19th Bombardment Group (Heavy), FIFTH Air Force, in aerial operations at Davao, Philippine Islands, on 9 January 1942. Major Broadhurst commanded a Flying Fortress which attacked Japanese shipping and scored a direct hit on an enemy battleship. The plane was forced to return to its base through an Equatorial storm. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Major Broadhurst, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army Air Forces.
