“Work Horse of the Western Front – The Story of the 30th Infantry Division” By Robert L. Hewitt

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Staff Sergeant Frank G. Yonski (ASN: 13056255), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company K, 3d Battalion, 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 16 October 1944, in Germany. As part of the plan for the encirclement of a strongly defended German city, the company with which Sergeant Yonski was serving as a squad leader was ordered to make a feint to divert enemy artillery fire and hostile forces from the main effort of the battalion. Advancing in front of his men, Sergeant Yonski worked tirelessly to keep his men under control, instructing them and encouraging them under the heavy enemy pressure to which they were subjected. While thus exposing himself, Sergeant Yonski was mortally wounded. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Staff Sergeant Yonski, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
