The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) George Michael Abraham Morwood (ASN: 0-963415/11016454), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the 99th Field Artillery Battalion, 1st Cavalry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 4 October 1951, near Chobakkol, Korea. During an assault on enemy emplacements, Lieutenant Morwood volunteered to lead a group of men through mortar and small arms fire in order to occupy a position desired by the company commander. Throughout the action, he remained with the assaulting elements, and on one occasion, fearlessly traversed an area swept by enemy fire, in order to re-supply a machine gun crew which had exhausted its ammunition. When the foe was forced to take up defensive positions, Lieutenant Morwood directed artillery fire with extreme accuracy, repelling repeated enemy counterattacks. His dauntless leadership and exceptional courage were instrumental in the successful accomplishment of the mission and served as an inspiration to his comrades. Lieutenant Norwood’s gallantry reflects great credit on himself and the military service.

    Headquarters, 9th Air Force, General Orders No. 1 (January 1, 1943) & General Orders No. 4 (January 8, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant George Michael Abraham Morwood (ASN: 0-963415/11016454), United States Army Air Forces, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving as a member of the Air Crew of a B-24 Liberator Bomber in the 513th Bombardment Squadron (Heavy), 376th Bombardment Group (Heavy), NINTH Air Force, in aerial operations in the North Africa Theater of Operations. During an operation on 6 November 1942, by a formation of B-17E bombers against the enemy at Tobruk Harbor, he, by his marksmanship and knowledge of his aircraft, so exhibited his ability that he contributed directly to the success of the raid. The anti-aircraft fire over the target area was exceedingly intense and exceptionally accurate. As soon as the ground fire was out-distanced, enemy fighters began to attack. He helped to ward off the attacks by helping to shoot down one fighter and probably damage others. The raid resulted in the confirmed destruction of a large enemy transport and the confirmed sinking of a medium Axis submarine. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Staff Sergeant Abraham Morwood, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army Air Forces.
