William Kurtis graduated from Kansas State Teachers College at Emporia, Kansas, in 1936, and was subsequently commissioned in the Marine Corps. He retired as a U.S. Marine Corps Brigadier General.

    (Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: Brigadier General William A. Kurtis, United States Marine Corps, was awarded the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” for heroic achievement while serving as Operations Officer of Marine Air Support Control Unit TWO at Okinawa from 1 April to 25 July 1945. Landing with the advance party of his unit on D-Day plus 1, Lieutenant Colonel Kurtis assumed the great responsibility of personally directing the activities of great numbers of aircraft participating in the support of the XXIV Army Corps. During the day of 19 April, he participated in and was in large measure responsible for the brilliant control of 376 aircraft in one hour.
