The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit with Combat “V” to Colonel Hewitt D. Adams (MCSN: 0-5562), United States Marine Corps, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States while serving with the FIRST Marine Division (Reinforced), in action against enemy aggressor forces in Korea from 21 November 1952 to 29 April 1953. Serving as a Regimental Commander, Colonel Adams displayed outstanding professional competence and fearless leadership in the execution of his duties. In spite of the dangers of heavy hostile fire, he frequently toured the front line positions to keep abreast of the construction operations and to familiarize himself with the friendly and enemy situations. His personal courage and leadership were inspirational to all who observed him and through his exceptional knowledge of friendly and enemy tactics, he successfully repulsed numerous attempts to penetrate the main line of resistance. When his unit was in a reserve status, he constantly strived for greater combat efficiency through extensive training programs. Working long hours under adverse conditions, he was constantly abreast of the tactical situation and his plans and recommendations were of immeasurable aid to the Commanding General in directing the operations of the Division.
