The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Kenneth C. Stowell, United States Navy, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a pilot of a torpedo bomber in Composite Squadron Eight-Five, attached to the U.S.S. LUNGA POINT in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima in the Volcano Islands on 2 March 1945, Lieutenant Stowell, by observing and designating targets while a Air Coordinator, during attacks on enemy ground installations materially aided his flight in executing devastating bombing, rocket and strafing runs on enemy positions. Although confronted with a low ceiling and hazy ground conditions, he was instrumental in providing vital air support for the ground troops. His skillful airmanship in the face of hostile anti-aircraft fire and his courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
