The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Fred P. Stafford, United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a Forward Air Controller near Long Thanh North, Republic of Vietnam, on 2 September 1969. On that date, while piloting an O-2A aircraft involved in a combat training mission Captain Stafford coordinated and directed a fighter air strike and helicopter fire power upon hostiles engaged against a friendly Thailand platoon. Although deteriorating weather and an English-Thai language barrier thwarted Captain Stafford’s activities, he was successful in repelling the hostiles’ attempts on the lone Thailand platoon. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Captain Stafford reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
