The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Specialist Gregory D. Spratt, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty. Specialist Spratt distinguished himself while serving as a crew chief-gunner of a UH-1D helicopter which was taking part in the extraction of a Reconnaissance Team trapped in a Viet Cong Base Camp. As his aircraft began to take hits immediately upon arrival in the area, he leaned far out of his aircraft and began to place suppressive fire into the enemy positions. Specialist Spratt is partially responsible for extracting the team from the jungle as he maintained his dangerous position throughout the firing. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
