The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Douglas G. Smith, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam. On 10 January 1970, Captain Smith was serving as the pilot of his helicopter for the Task Force Commander of Task Force Thunder. When word was received that a friendly patrol had detonated an anti-tank mine, Captain Smith quickly evacuated the most serious casualty who was suffering from traumatic amputations. Captain Smith’s courageous initiative and exemplary professionalism significantly contributed to saving his fellow comrade’s life. Captain Smith’s actions are in keeping with the finest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 1st Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
