The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Warrant Officer Clark E. Scarborough, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty. Warrant Officer Scarborough distinguished himself while serving as aircraft commander of a UH-1D helicopter involved in an airmobile operation near Dong Tam, Republic of Vietnam when his flight encountered intense small arms and automatic weapons fire from tree lines surrounding the landing zone. He was attempting to land his aircraft when rounds tore into the cockpit, wounding him in the leg. Unable to fly and maneuver his aircraft out of the area, he calmly and alertly directed his pilot through the enemy lines. Flying over the menace of enemy fortifications back to friendly lines, he was determined to complete this mission. Through his courage and personal bravery, he contributed immeasurably to the successful completion of the mission. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
