The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Major Don B. Munson, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty while serving with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2d Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Air Cavalry Division, in the Republic of Vietnam. Major Munson distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 17 May 1968, while serving as Operations Officer of the 2d Battalion, 7th Cavalry during a combat mission near Camp Evans, Republic of Vietnam. When ground forces came under attack while being extracted and several soldiers were left stranded in the pickup zone, Major Munson accompanied the command and control helicopter as it descended through the intense enemy fire. Completely exposed to the heavy enemy ground fire, Major Munson was instrumental in the successful extraction of the stranded personnel. His display of personal bravery and devotion to duty is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service, and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.

Headquarters, 1st Air Cavalry Division, General Orders No. 8774 (July 19, 1968)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Infantry) Don B. Munson (ASN: 0-90328), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Major Munson distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 31 May 1968, while serving as the S-3 of the 2d Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Air Cavalry Division, on a mission near Camp Evans, Republic of Vietnam. When the Command Group spotted several Viet Cong soldiers on the ground, Major Munson volunteered to risk his own life in order to stop the insurgents. After being left on the ground by the command ship, alone with one other person, Major Munson remained on the ground until the enemy was within range. With complete disregard for his own safety he engaged and pursued the Viet Cong. His actions are credited with killing one and capturing another. Major Munson’s gallant action is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
