The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Carlos J. Melendez, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight, evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty while serving with the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Brigade, 101st Airborne Division, in the Republic of Vietnam. Long range reconnaissance patrol number four of the 1st Brigade, 101st Airborne Division came under a determined attack by an estimated enemy platoon near Quang Ngai, Republic of Vietnam. The team fought gallantly, but it was obvious that they would not hold out indefinitely. The Commanding General of the 1st Brigade ordered Captain Melendez to prepare his aircraft for immediate departure to the area of operation. Captain Melendez, realizing the urgency of the mission, reached the area quickly and marked the spot accurately. He aggressively and skillfully maneuvered his aircraft so that the Commanding General was in visual contact constantly with the action and in a position to direct it effectively. Throughout the action, Captain Melendez maintained complete control over his aircraft and the situation, as he coolly demonstrated the highest degree of courage and skill. His absolute fearlessness in the performance of his duty ensured that available fire was accurately delivered, causing the enemy heavy casualties. Captain Melendez’s outstanding flying ability and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
