The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Major Robert E. Kimmel, United States Army Air Forces, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight in the European and North African Theatres of Operations as pilot of a B-17 type aircraft. Throughout the entire Tunisian Campaign, Major Kimmel has distinguished himself as a combat pilot and as group operations officer. His conspicuous gallantry and superior leadership have been of high inspiration to all who have served under him. On many combat sorties, his skilled flying technique and his expert handling of tactical formations have been the deciding factors in the successful completion of the mission. This consistent, calm efficiency in the face of concentrated anti-aircraft fire and determined attacks by hostile fighters have reflected great credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
