The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Specialist Fourth Class Steven A. Healey, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty. Specialist Four Healey distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as gunner on an armed helicopter. He spotted enemy locations and directed his pilot to them, and while his ship attacked these positions he repeatedly exposed himself to the enemy fire in order to accurately suppress the enemy positions. The gunship was hit by .30 caliber fire and Specialist Four Healey was wounded in the thigh Despite his painful wound he remained calm and informed his pilot of his wound while directing his accurate fire on the enemy position. Battle damage forced his aircraft to crash land and he directed his fire on the enemy soldier who were advancing toward the aircraft impact area Refusing medical aid Specialist Four Healey kept up his defensive position until another aircraft was able to evacuate the downed crew. Courage under fire and extreme devotion to duty were exemplary. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military actions and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
