The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Major (Infantry) Charles F. Hatfield, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty. Major Hatfield distinguished himself while serving as aircraft commander of a UH-1D smoke ship during an insertion of troops near Duc Hoa, Republic if Vietnam. Flying the smoke ship, he made numerous low passes over the hostile position preceding the troop-carrying helicopters into the landing zone. He voluntarily exposed himself to the deadly fire in order to provide protection for his fellow soldiers. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
