The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain James P. Hanny, United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a C-130E Pilot, Seventh Airborne Command and Control Squadron, Udorn Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand, on 2 October 1971. On that date, while on short final approach to landing during a heavy rain shower, the aircraft’s number four propeller suddenly pitch-locked. Captain Hanny immediately noticed the condition and shut down the affected engine according to prescribed emergency procedures. He then continued the approach to a successful three engine landing, on a rain swept runway, saving the multimillion dollar aircraft and its crew of eighteen. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Captain Hanny reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
