The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Warrant Officer Earl G. Fossum, II, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam. Fossum distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 6 December 1967, while serving as a pilot of a CH-47 armed helicopter, during an extraction mission. When an aircraft was downed in enemy controlled terrain, Fossum exposed himself to the hostile ground fire in order to extract the downed helicopter. While he hovered over the wreckage he directed effective fire on the insurgent’s position, enabling his helicopter to evacuate the downed and fully equipped aircraft to safety. His outstanding flying ability and devotion to duty is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself his unit and the United Stated Army.
