The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Joseph P. Davis, United States Army, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty. Captain Davis distinguished himself by exceptionally meritorious achievement while serving as the Battalion Aircraft Maintenance Officer. Refusing normal duty hours, Captain Davis has flown all types of assigned aircraft in testing, mission participation and the full spectrum of maintenance flying under the stress of combat, his own standard of assuring mechanical excellence in inclement weather conditions. He frequently was called upon to fly Night Hawk missions and to assist unit maintenance personnel in rigging downed helicopters under enemy fire. His proven skill and applied flight procedures for raising new test pilots to his own high safety standards have doubtless saved many lives of fellow aviators who hold him in high esteem. His professional attitude, guidance and outstanding flying expertise have enabled his men to successfully complete their timely and vital missions. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
