The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Henry L. Terry (MCSN: 320734), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Machine Gun Section Leader, serving with Company K, Third Battalion, Twenty-fifth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division during action on enemy Japanese held Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands on 11 March 1945. When all the personnel of his section had been killed or wounded by intense enemy mortar fire in an attack from Hill 382, Corporal Terry unhesitatingly proceeded to evacuate his wounded comrades from a sector cove red by heavy hostile fire. With complete disregard for his personal safety he exposed himself repeatedly to carry six helpless men to a place of safety behind our lines and was attempting to rescue a seventh when he fell mortally wounded by Japanese machine gun fire. His courage and self-sacrificing devotion to duty inspired his comrades and reflected the highest credit upon Corporal Terry and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
