The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal John E. Norton (MCSN: 2593738), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Rifleman with Company E, Second Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On the night of 29 December 1970, while maneuvering in the vicinity of Bich Nam (1) Hamlet, Corporal Norton’s squad-sized patrol came under a heavy volume of fire from Viet Cong soldiers occupying well-concealed emplacements in tall elephant grass. During the initial moments of the fire fight, the point man was killed and Corporal Norton was seriously wounded. Realizing the necessity for immediate action to divert attention from his companions, and fully aware of the possible consequences, he nevertheless charged the suspected enemy position but was mortally wounded as he attacked through a hail of hostile fire. His prompt and heroic action inspired all who observed him and provided his patrol with sufficient time to deploy into effective fighting positions from which to assault and defeat the enemy. By his courage, bold initiative, and selfless devotion to duty in the face of grave personal danger. Corporal Norton upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
