The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant Leo B. Myers (MCSN: 0-102529), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Platoon Commander with Company H, Second Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On the night of 11 February 1968, during Operation HUE CITY, First Lieutenant Myers’ platoon came under a vicious hand grenade and anti-tank rocket attack. Unhesitatingly leaving his place of relative security, First Lieutenant Myers fearlessly maneuvered across the fire-swept terrain to a forward position and, from a dangerously exposed vantage point, pinpointed the principal source of enemy fire only five meters distant. Racing back through the hazardous area to his platoon command post, he seized eight hand grenades and, again braving the fusillade of hostile rockets and grenades, returned to the point of heavies contact. Boldly standing in full view of the enemy soldiers, he threw the hand grenades across a narrow alley which separated the hostile and friendly force until he succeeded in suppressing the enemy fire. His heroic and determined actions inspired all who observed him and were instrumental in enabling his battalion to launch an attack the following morning which subsequently drove the enemy from the southern portion of the city of Hue. By his courage, bold initiative and unwavering devotion to duty in the face of grave personal danger, First Lieutenant Myers upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
